Creativity
Before I went to law school I was a painter. I knew artists and art people, and admired their creativity and insight. At some point I grew away from painting and was able to take on a more subtle worldview, but I still believed that the highest form of human life was art, and that artists had some kind of special monopoly on creativity.
As a lawyer, though, I’ve seen how independent businesspeople put their whole selves into their work, all of their powers and resources. It’s not just their “creativity,” but it’s their full life energy that transforms their projects. In fact, it’s unusual for artists to have that kind of singlemindedness and vitality, especially over time, as they plateau stylistically and economically, but businesspeople probably enjoy a quicker cycle of challenge and reward and are able keep at it over time.
I still believe that human society needs art of the most esoteric sort to redeem itself somehow, but I have really come to admire and honor the creativity that people put into their business work. It’s my pleasure to be able to help them, on the legal services side, move their mountains.
